“CALYPSO HURRICANE IS ONE OF BOSTON’S BEST BANDS” – WGBH RADIO,
announcing Jazz On The Square Series

Micke

Micke hails from Sweden, and specializes in Afro-Cuban music playing congas, timbales, bongos, maracas and other hand percussion. In addition to performing with Calypso Hurricane, he has numerous recording credits, and has toured internationally. Micke’s performance on Osvaldo Golijov’s La Pasion Segun San Marcos (St. Mark Passion) earned him a Grammy nomination. Micke is also an associate professor in the percussion department at Berklee College of Music.

Danny Mo

Danny played with the Jon Pousette-Dart band and the James Montgomery Blues Band before joining Calypso Hurricane. He has performed with Bo Diddley, Robin Ford, and Paula Abdul. As a professor at Berklee College of Music, his message to students perfectly expresses what he brings to the band. “There’s a consequence to every note you play. And even when you don’t play, such as when there’s a rest, there’s a consequence, because when the bass comes in, it’s going to be huge.”

Mark

Mark started Calypso Hurricane because of his love for caribbean music and desire to blend it with rock and R&B. He has written and produced three albums of original music, and has brought the band to national and international performances and back home to beach parties. He holds a degree in classical guitar, and has performed both in concert and at private events. In addition to booking and performing with Calypso Hurricane, Mark teaches individualized music instruction to private students.

P.J.

Born in Trinidad, West Indies, P.J. is a creative pioneer who blends this traditional island instrument with jazz, R&B, rock, hip hop, and classical music. He has performed with The Boston Pops (under John Williams), Bobby Brown, Bob Moses, Stan Strickland, and Mozamba. P.J. performed in the A.R.T.’s production of Derek Walcott’s ‘Steel’. He is also an instructor of pan approach, style, and methods.

Dave

Dave began his musical career touring with the legendary group Powerhouse, and has shared the stage with many blues masters including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, James Montgomery, The Nighthalks, rock musician Frank Zappa, and avante-garde jazz master Cecil Taylor. He rounds out Calypso Hurricane’s sound alternating between tenor and soprano sax, flute, and piccolo.

Bertram

Our latest addition to the band, Bertram has over 20 CD recordings to his credit, and has played with such diverse musicians as Paquito D’Rivera, Randy Brecker, the Fringe, Danilo Perez, and Kenny Werner. He was the winner of JAZZIZ magazine’s 1996 Percussionists on Fire competition, and has performed at Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Bertram is also an assistant professor in the percussion department at Berklee.
